PS3's latest Phenomenon: Little Big Planet

Little_big_planet_1280x1024.jpg

If you're into gaming then you'll definitely remember the classic Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog games from years gone by and even the more recent ones. However, it's been a while since a new character and vehicle has been created for a new generation of gamers - Cue Sack-Boy and Little Big Planet.

PS3 have managed to make a platform game that is the pinnacle in regards to customisiing what you want to see and play on screen in regards to a platform game. Little Big Planet is the new virtual world where you can play for hours as the character Sack-Boy (or sack-girl).

I went down to check out and demo the game last night at a secret location in London. Have look at how I got on...

Diesel XXX Barcelona

banner_tiki.jpg

I had the pleasure of attending the Barcelona leg of Diesel's international XXX parties on Saturday night. To celebrate their 30th Birthday the denim developers threw parties simultaneously in 17 cities around the globe starting in Tokyo and then Beijing, Dubai, Athens, Amsterdam, Milan, Zurich, Munich, Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Oslo, Helsinki, London, Sao Paulo and finally New York.

Acts including N*E*R*D*, M.I.A., Chaka Khan, 2manydjs, Soulwax, The Cool Kids, New Young Pony Club, The View, Mark Ronson, Supergrass and many more took to stages around the world and were broadcast live on the web. If you didn't see the hilarious viral advert that was made for the party, make sure you check it out below...

Let me set the scene, the Barcelona party was held at Castell de Montjuic, a towering fortress that dates from the 17th century and overlooks the harbour from the southeast of the city. There's around a thousand people waiting in the moonlight wearing the clown masks that ensured entrance to the nights events.

We're waiting above the castles' rear grounds that contain two massive circus tents that light the side of the castle in a rainbow of colours. Intrigued, we were led down a rock carved pathway into the main tent greeted by acrobats, dancers and bubbles, Diesel it seems, know how to throw a party.

There were five sets in the main tent, DJ Marc Xocoa set the evening off with the Rock N Roll Circus theme. Next up, aggressive R&B/ punk The Do's, followed by Los Tiki Phantoms (pictured above). This four piece from Barcelona were awesome and pumped out manic surf rock n roll and we felt like we were in the middle of a Tarantino movie.

Thirdly, the local crowd seemed to love Hidrogenesse just as much as the Los Tiki Phantoms, an art rock duo that reminded me of a type of Spanish Mighty Boosh. They were followed by DJ Coco and the night ended with a set from legendary DJ, producer, and George Clooney's composer of choice, David Holmes. This finished the Rock N Roll Circus theme off perfectly.

As parties go this one was pretty amazing. Alongside Diesel, I’d especially like to thank MTV Madrid legend Alicia Toboso, Anna at BCore, Laura and Ines. Muchas Gracias!!!

It’s the Jonas Brothers

100_0011.jpg

Having ‘ accidently’ walked on to their set during their rehearsals at the VMA’s in LA, then bumping into them on the Red Carpet at the premiere of Camp Rock in London, you could say me and the Jonas boys are old pals.

So of course I couldn’t refuse heading down to the Soho hotel after my interview with Colin Farrell yesterday (you’ll have to wait for that blog as my lips are sealed on what we talked about until closer to release of film ‘Pride and Glory’) to interview squeaky clean Kevin, Joe and Nick.

It’s always a pleasure interviewing these guys as they are absolute dotes. They’ve remembered our previous encounters and asked me how I’ve been since last time they saw me. Sweeties! God love them though as I don’t know how they manage to fit in everything they do – between making movies, a reality show, touring, completing new album ‘a little bit longer’ and having to do a million interviews, it doesn’t leave much time for some fun or even some sleeping.

Surprisingly the lads gave me an insight into what type of music they listen to in their VERY RARE downtime citing The Zutons and Coldplay as favourites. They also said that a possibility of a collaboration with Chris Brown was VERY likely. Looking forward to that...

As I was leaving the Soho Hotel there was a group of very excited young girls congregating outside. I don't think they were impressed that I got to talk to their idols and they barely got a glimpse! Lucky I just managed to slip into my taxi before one of them threw the first punch;)

Pixeltrees.com - Launch of new Charity!

100_0017.jpg

Last night after interviewing the Jonas Brothers in Soho, my MTV buddies and I dropped by the launch of Pixeltrees.com at The Rainforest Café in London.

Pixeltrees.com is a website aiming to sell pixels of advertising space in order save a million trees. Realising businesses have to make a profit, ya know since they’re a business and all, one way is through advertising. So why not combine the two. Smart guys!

At the launch were some familiar faces from reality show Big Brother as well as some soap stars…. Ohh fancy! I was a bit more interested in the location of the launch - The Rainforest Café -and even made friends with the mechanical gorilla swinging from the ceiling ( that’s him in the photo behind me - I like that he doesn’t talk back).

But seriously the website is a great idea as the money generated from the sold pixels will be used to save trees in association with the World Land Trust. 1 tree = 1 pixel sold. A million pixels are available….. so yep you guessed it a million trees can be saved!

McCain aint no 'Hero' of Foo Fighters!

Grohl.htm

On my list of people I want to meet before I die is Dave Grohl.. fingers crossed it’ll happen any day now (meeting Grohl that is not em.. dying). Anyway, Dave and the rest of the Foo Fighters gang aren’t too happy at the moment with a certain Republican Presidential candidate. Yup the guys have joined a growing list of artists that are a bit ticked off with John McCain's taste in campaign music.

Yesterday my fav rock band said they believed the McCain campaign displayed a lack of respect by using "My Hero" at rallies without first getting permission. It’s a fair enough point though, using a song automatically makes a connection between the artist and the campaign so if there’s no permission, well that’s not good at all at all!

This is what the lads had to say to Senator McCain:

"It's frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property. The saddest thing about this is that 'My Hero' was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song."

Have a listen to the song as it should be:

By the way, this isn’t the only time McCain has upset musicians. Previously, Jackson Browne filed suit against the McCain campaign for using his song "Running on Empty" without consent. And the rock group Heart was also unimpressed at the use of its song "Barracuda" for events featuring McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin. Co-writer Roger Fisher has said he will give a portion of his royalty income to the Democrats. Miaow! This Presidential race just gets more and more like an episode of Days of Our lives. Love it!

Katy's fed up of men blowing 'Hot n Cold'

We loved it but we're all starting to get a bit sick of 'I kissed a girl' at this stage. Yes we know you liked it Katy and I'm sure your boyfriend didn't mind it but let's move on! Thankfully she has! This time she's shouting about men being hot n cold and never knowing what they want - I hear ya sister! Check out her new vid for 'Hot n Cold'..

Ya still want more? Well. when I spoke to Katy two weeks ago when she played Scala in London she told me she wanted to get away from the sex kitten feel and be a bit more kooky as she says it's more 'her'. Have a little peek behind the scenes of making the vid... Love this girls make up!

New Kanye Video

Kanye and Me.jpg

Now the last time a rapper decided to really sing his heart out on records he was soon shut down by the hip hop community. Ja Rule was massively successful during the earlier years of this decade until the emergence of 50 Cent and his decision to virtually end Ja Rule's reign as Hip Hop's No.1 artist.

Six or seven years on and rapper/producer Kanye West is definitely at the forefront of popular music, fast becoming a Hip Hop legend. Cue Mr. West (Vocoder and all) and we now have Kanye releasing a track where he sings from start to finish, titled 'Love Lockdown'.

Photobucket
After beating 50 Cent in their last album sales battle, as well as being part of Jay-Z's Roc-a-fella camp, who was ever going to be big enough to challenge or question him about this bold but exciting track publicly? Dr. Dre? Nope, he has too much riding on his next album 'Detox'. Snoop Dogg? Nope because he did a similar thing with his single 'Sexual Eruption' or 'Sensual Seduction' as it became known. That leaves Nas, but he's a Hip Hop vet compared to Kanye so that wouldn't make sense either.

So Kanye West does it again! In my opinion he's actually pulled off singing on a record as a hip hop artist like none before and I say this because people are actually taking it seriously and not judging it with their tongues firmly planted in their cheeks, which is a great achievement.

I remember being in an interview with Kanye when he first came to the UK promoting 'The college drop out'. He was asked who he thought was his main competition in the charts - his answer: Justin Timberlake! Justins album 'Justified' was a massive international success at the time so to me that just showed and still shows how progressive and forward thinking he is as an all round artist.

Judge for yourself

What’s the matter?

matter logo

The new venue from the team behind Fabric opened a couple of weeks ago and as a hardened clubber (at the tender age of 23) I had to check it out. Based in the O2 Arena matter has been purpose built to give punters a sensory overloading audio and visual experience- it doesn’t disappoint.

I saw Simian Mobile Disco DJ plus Lindstrom, Riton and Adventures Close To Home spin dirty dirty house music at the This Is Not London night.

The incredible projections and lights made the night while- as you’d expect from the Fabric lot- the soundsystem was f*cking booming. Since Friday I’ve spent many man hours explaining the ‘body-kinetic dancefloor’ to friends but it has to be felt to believed.

Somehow club-loving boffins have invented a floor surface that sends the music around your person and into your brain. If that sounds trippy- just go try it.

AND despite being located in the most corporate venue in Britain matter still works as a club. It feels industrial inside and with a mixed up-for-it crowd it never feels too exclusive. Thankfully the venue also has a separate entrance to the main arena meaning you can avoid the mobile phone logos and- on the night I went- Lee Evans fans (shudder).

With the loss of Canvas, The Key and Turnmills and The End about to close London needs new rooms for all night clubbing. Matter is a welcome addition and already one of the best clubs in the country.

I’ll see you back there in a couple of weeks. James Murphy on October 24th since you ask…
