The new venue from the team behind Fabric opened a couple of weeks ago and as a hardened clubber (at the tender age of 23) I had to check it out. Based in the O2 Arena matter has been purpose built to give punters a sensory overloading audio and visual experience- it doesn’t disappoint.
I saw Simian Mobile Disco DJ plus Lindstrom, Riton and Adventures Close To Home spin dirty dirty house music at the This Is Not London night.
The incredible projections and lights made the night while- as you’d expect from the Fabric lot- the soundsystem was f*cking booming. Since Friday I’ve spent many man hours explaining the ‘body-kinetic dancefloor’ to friends but it has to be felt to believed.
Somehow club-loving boffins have invented a floor surface that sends the music around your person and into your brain. If that sounds trippy- just go try it.
AND despite being located in the most corporate venue in Britain matter still works as a club. It feels industrial inside and with a mixed up-for-it crowd it never feels too exclusive. Thankfully the venue also has a separate entrance to the main arena meaning you can avoid the mobile phone logos and- on the night I went- Lee Evans fans (shudder).
With the loss of Canvas, The Key and Turnmills and The End about to close London needs new rooms for all night clubbing. Matter is a welcome addition and already one of the best clubs in the country.
I’ll see you back there in a couple of weeks. James Murphy on October 24th since you ask…
