On my list of people I want to meet before I die is Dave Grohl.. fingers crossed it’ll happen any day now (meeting Grohl that is not em.. dying). Anyway, Dave and the rest of the Foo Fighters gang aren’t too happy at the moment with a certain Republican Presidential candidate. Yup the guys have joined a growing list of artists that are a bit ticked off with John McCain's taste in campaign music.
Yesterday my fav rock band said they believed the McCain campaign displayed a lack of respect by using "My Hero" at rallies without first getting permission. It’s a fair enough point though, using a song automatically makes a connection between the artist and the campaign so if there’s no permission, well that’s not good at all at all!
This is what the lads had to say to Senator McCain:
"It's frustrating and infuriating that someone who claims to speak for the American people would repeatedly show such little respect for creativity and intellectual property. The saddest thing about this is that 'My Hero' was written as a celebration of the common man and his extraordinary potential. To have it appropriated without our knowledge and used in a manner that perverts the original sentiment of the lyric just tarnishes the song."
Have a listen to the song as it should be:
By the way, this isn’t the only time McCain has upset musicians. Previously, Jackson Browne filed suit against the McCain campaign for using his song "Running on Empty" without consent. And the rock group Heart was also unimpressed at the use of its song "Barracuda" for events featuring McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin. Co-writer Roger Fisher has said he will give a portion of his royalty income to the Democrats. Miaow! This Presidential race just gets more and more like an episode of Days of Our lives. Love it!
